Sales tax on appliance repair
Repair labor is taxable here. There is no VAT in Malaysia; the relevant indirect tax is the Sales and Service Tax (SST). The Service Tax rate rose from 6% to 8% on 1 March 2024 (Service Tax (Rate of Tax) (Amendment) Order 2024). 'Repair or maintenance services' for movable goods/equipment, including household appliances, were added as a new taxable service category under Group I, First Schedule, Service Tax Regulations 2018, effective the same date, but registration — and so charging SST at all — is only mandatory once a provider's annual taxable turnover exceeds RM500,000. Repairs fixed to a residential building's structure are exempt, and most small independent appliance-repair technicians sit below the RM500,000 threshold and charge no SST — so treat 8% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Repair or maintenance services (movable goods/equipment, including household appliances) were added as a new taxable service category under Group I, First Schedule, Service Tax Regulations 2018, effective 1 March 2024, with mandatory registration only once annual taxable turnover exceeds RM500,000.

Licensing & certification
There is no dedicated national trade licence specifically for 'appliance repair' technicians in Malaysia; a repair business simply registers as a normal enterprise with SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia / Companies Commission of Malaysia). Where a job touches a home's fixed electrical wiring — not just plugging in an appliance — the Electricity Supply Act 1990 requires the work to be done or supervised by a Competent Person registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (the Energy Commission), typically a certified Wireman (grades PW1–PW4) or an Electrical Services Engineer/Chargeman for larger jobs. No equivalent national certification (comparable to an F-gas ticket) was found specifically for refrigerant handling by aircon or fridge repair technicians.
