The transparent price guide for home services

Know what home services should cost — before anyone quotes you.

Pick the job, the details, and your location. You get an estimated range built from a published formula and named, dated sources — no fake precision. Two services are live: appliance repair and HVAC repair, in 27 markets and 19 currencies, each priced from its own country's data. See how in the methodology. Reviewed July 2026.

Who reviews this: every English-language appliance and HVAC page — including every range on this page — is reviewed by Ivan, a Red Seal–certified appliance service technician with 20 years of experience in the trades, holding Technical Safety BC gas certification (Gas-C). His credential numbers are published, not implied: see who runs this site.

The 10 most-searched appliance repairs Estimated

U.S. national ranges — every market prices from its own national sources in its own currency, never converted. Each row links to the full breakdown: parts vs. labor, brand adjustments, and a ZIP-code localizer. The "most common repair" is the fix most often responsible for that symptom in our dataset — the same column the deep pages render. The DIY figure counts how many of that symptom's listed fixes are homeowner-doable; the rest need a pro.

How a price on this site is built

Take the repair the calculators default to: refrigerator, not cooling.

It is a range because the same symptom has more than one cause. We publish the spread instead of a fake midpoint, and every range is at least ±15% wide — honest pricing can't be narrower than the real variance between causes, parts, and firms.

The card above is the whole method in one place. The national range comes first. Then one published formula localizes it: local range = national base × index(metro), where the index comes from official wage data — labor is the part of a repair bill that actually varies by place. Brand and quality tier adjust the parts share only; labor never changes with the logo on the door. The base data was compiled 2026-07, and each source is named and dated on the page itself.

What actually drives the price

Two levers move an appliance repair bill, and only one of them is geographic. Labor varies with local technician wages — that's what the metro index localizes, and why the same fault costs more in a high-wage metro with identical parts. Parts vary with the brand: Sub-Zero ×1.5, Wolf ×1.5, Miele ×1.45 sit above the mainstream baseline because proprietary OEM parts have limited aftermarket competition, while Amana ×0.9 and Frigidaire ×0.9 sit below it thanks to shared parts platforms. Each factor is published on the brand pages with its written basis — never a guess.

The other line on the invoice is the diagnostic fee, billed separately because finding the fault is real work even when you decline the repair. And some fixes cost nothing at all: where the honest answer to a symptom is "clean the filter" or "reset the breaker," our tables show a $0 floor and say so, rather than inventing a minimum charge.

Home services we price

Two services are live today. Every guide we publish holds to the same bar: a published localization formula, named and dated sources, and Estimated ranges only — never a single made-up number.

Reading an error code?

When the display shows a fault code, the diagnosis — and the price — gets specific. A code's technical meaning is manufacturer fact and the same everywhere; what changes by market is which brands are actually on local kitchen walls, so each market's directory shows its own real brand set. We keep 1084 published manufacturer codes across 48 brands, each decoded and, where the fault maps to a priced repair, linked to its cost range. A few examples:

BrandCodeWhat it means
Samsung5E · 5C · SE · SCDrain error — not draining correctly
LGOEDrain error — water cannot drain
WhirlpoolF8E1Water-fill fault — not detecting the correct incoming water
BoschE18 · F18Drainage fault — can't pump out
GEE1Fill problem — not filling

What a diagnostic visit costs, by market

The call-out (a technician at your door, fault identified) is the one price almost every repair starts with — and it's rarely published side-by-side across borders. These are the current observed ranges, each in its own market's currency from that market's own published sources, with the full fee breakdown and citations on each market's service-call-fee page:

MarketDiagnostic / call-out
United States$75–$150
Canada$89–$200 CAD
United Kingdom£45–£150
Germany€50–€120
Australia$120–$220 AUD
Spain€30–€60
Mexico$200–$1,000 MXN
Japan¥3,850–¥5,830

All ranges Estimated — never FX-converted; a market's fee comes only from that market's sources.

How current this is

Every price block on this site carries a citation triplet: the base source and its year, the localization source and its vintage, and a "last reviewed" date. That date is tied to a real data refresh — it moves when the underlying data or the page's content actually changes, not on a timer. The current base guides were compiled 2026-07 (retrieval dates on each source), the wage-localization series and their vintages are in the registry above, and when a market's data ages past its refresh window, its pages say so rather than quietly pretending otherwise.

How this site is funded and kept independent

The guides are free and carry no booking, no phone lines, and no lead forms. The publisher also operates an independent appliance-repair company in Canada; links to it appear on exactly three Canadian metro pages, each labeled as a disclosed, sponsored link — and those links never touch a price: every range comes from the published formula and the named public sources above, and would read the same if the links didn't exist. If advertising is ever introduced, the privacy policy will say so before the first ad renders.
