Sales tax on appliance repair
Repair labor is taxable here. Appliance-repair labour AND parts are standard-rated for VAT at 20% (HMRC’s standard rate on “most goods and services”). No reduced/zero rate or exemption applies to domestic appliance repair — the 5% reduced rate covers a fixed list (e.g. children’s car seats, home energy) and the 0% zero rate covers e.g. most food/children’s clothes; repair is on neither. VAT is UK-wide (reserved) so the rate is identical in England, Scotland, Wales and NI. Honesty nuance: the VAT-registration threshold is £90,000 taxable turnover (rolling 12 months), so many small/sole-trader repairers are NOT VAT-registered and add no VAT — quoted GBP prices are inconsistent on whether 20% is included; treat 20% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.

Licensing & certification
No general occupational appliance-repair licence exists in the UK; specific hazard-based certifications are mandatory. (1) GAS: work on gas appliances requires Gas Safe Register membership under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (SI 1998/2451), enforced by HSE — “for a gas engineering business to legally undertake gas work … they must be on the Gas Safe Register” (scope: GB, NI, IoM, Guernsey). (2) REFRIGERANT (the UK replacement for US EPA-608): a personal F-gas qualification (City & Guilds 2079 Cat I–IV / LCL Level 3) plus company F-gas certification are required for refrigeration/AC/heat-pump work under the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2015 (SI 2015/310) + retained EU 517/2014, enforced by the Environment Agency — “It is against the law to work with F gas if you do not have the correct qualifications.” Domestic fridges/freezers are usually hermetically sealed and small-charge, so ordinary repairs (thermostats, fans, boards, seals) don’t need it, but sealed-system/refrigerant work does. Never cite EPA-608 for the UK. (3) ELECTRICAL: Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P) applies in England & Wales; repairs, maintenance and like-for-like replacements are NON-notifiable — only new circuits, consumer-unit swaps or special-location work need a registered competent person (NICEIC/NAPIT) or Building Control. Scotland (Building Standards) and Northern Ireland run separate systems. (4) TRADER: register with HMRC for tax (VAT only above £90,000 turnover); waste-carrier registration (Environment Agency/SEPA/NRW/NIEA) is needed only if you haul away old appliances (WEEE).
