How this is built: we apply the 50% rule (Hydro One) — spend no more than half a comparable new unit's cost on a repair — with its lifespan corollary (replacement is favored once the unit is past the midpoint of its expected life and the quote tops 50%). Columns are your repair quote as a share of a new central air conditioning ($4,000–$7,000 CAD); the $2,000–$3,500 CAD and $1,200–$2,100 CAD thresholds are just 50% and 30% of that range. Rows use the midpoint of the expected life (about 8 years — halfway through a typical 16-year lifespan) and the top of the sourced 12–20 years range (20 years). Nothing here is a per-unit price or a recommendation — it is a transparent reading of the rule.
lifespan_years is a UNION of two disagreeing Canadian sources (Carrier Canada 15-20 vs the Ontario contractor B&G Heating 12-15), flagged with lifespan_years_union: each bound is individually sourced, but NO single source states the full 12-20 band, so any midpoint or half-life a consumer derives from it is a union artifact, not a sourced figure. The span preserves both ends rather than picking a midpoint. Two provenance caveats: B&G's supporting NRCan '15 years or longer' figure is that Ontario page's citation of NRCan (not read off an NRCan page directly for this file), and B&G attributes its 12-15 practical Ontario benchmark to the regional stressors it names explicitly: hot stretches that force long cooling cycles and high summer humidity (the unit pulling moisture as well as cooling air), freeze-thaw wear on cabinet finishes and fasteners, road-salt corrosion on condenser coils and metal surfaces, winter exposure (snow, ice and wind leaving the outdoor unit damp and prone to rust), and airflow-blocking debris such as leaves, grass clippings, pollen and dust (bgheating.ca re-fetched 2026-07-22 — the page names no Quebec factor and no continuous June-August operation). The same page states the 50% rule for AC specifically: "If a major repair starts approaching about half the value of replacement, especially on an older unit, replacement usually deserves serious consideration." new_unit_cad is FurnacePrices.ca's Canadian average installed cost; install_delivery_cad is null because that figure is a single bundled installed total.
One more thing before you replace
A newer central air conditioning can cut energy and water use, which shifts the math on an older unit even when a repair is cheap: ENERGY STAR notes clothes washers over ~10 years and refrigerators over ~15 years are common efficiency-driven replacements.
