HVAC Repair — New Zealand

Emergency & After-Hours HVAC Repair Cost (New Zealand, 2026)

Need a technician tonight, this weekend, or on a holiday? New Zealand trades publish a call-out-plus-premium convention: a standard diagnostic call-out runs $80–$150 before hourly rates apply, while published after-hours structures range from a flat “$300 + GST for the first hour” to an “after-hours call-out fee: $250” plus $132/hr, and public-holiday work is published at $300. Every figure below is a verbatim published New Zealand fee statement, not an average. But it is not universal: plenty of companies publish no after-hours premium at all. The figures below are shown verbatim, never averaged. Reviewed July 2026.

These surcharges sit on top of the standard service-call / diagnostic fee. See the New Zealand service call & diagnostic fee guide for the base visit charge that the premium is added to.

Evenings, weekends, and holidays can carry a surcharge — but far from always. National cost guides put the premium at:

After-hours"$300 + GST for the first hour, $120.00 + GST per hour for every hour following"Published under "24/7 residential call outs" for "Call-outs outside of 7 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday", against a standard-hours rate of "$130 + GST for the first hour and $89.95 + GST per hour for every hour following". The same company publishes a separate "Heat Pump Technician" line at the standard rate with "Heat pump servicing from $139.95 + GST", so the after-hours call-out rate is the one that applies to an out-of-hours heat pump attendance. GST-exclusive. "Additional charges may apply for services on public holidays" and "Travel outside of Christchurch will incur an additional charge". The page does not state that the fee is credited toward the repair.Christchurch / wider CanterburyPublished rate
After-hours"After-hours rates start at $180"From the company's own FAQ: "Our standard service rate is $88 + GST during normal hours (7am–4pm), which includes the call-out and the first hour. After-hours rates start at $180, and public holiday services are charged at $300." The same FAQ ties this explicitly to heat pumps: "we're available 24/7 for urgent electrical issues. Whether it's a power outage, faulty wiring, or a heat pump breakdown, our technicians are just a call away." The firm supplies, installs, services and repairs heat pumps. GST treatment is stated only on the standard rate ($88 + GST); the page does not restate it for the after-hours figure. Not stated whether the fee is credited toward the repair.Tauranga / Rotorua / Bay of PlentyPublished rate
public holiday"public holiday services are charged at $300"Same FAQ line as the after-hours entry above, quoted in full: "Our standard service rate is $88 + GST during normal hours (7am–4pm), which includes the call-out and the first hour. After-hours rates start at $180, and public holiday services are charged at $300." Roughly a 3.4x step up on the standard-hours rate and a 1.7x step up on the after-hours rate.Tauranga / Rotorua / Bay of PlentyPublished rate
After-hours"After-hours call-out fee: $250" plus "After-hours rate: $132/hr"Fee schedule headed "N.B all rates exclude GST". After hours is defined as "after 4pm / before 7.30am, Monday-Friday; any time Saturday or Sunday". The $250 is "One-off fee for attending outside of regular operating hours. After-hours rate for work carried out applies on top of this", and the $132/hr carries a "Two hour minimum charge; charged for time incurred, including travel (to the nearest 1/4 hour) after this." Standard hours (8am–4pm Mon–Fri) are "$87/hour" with a one-hour minimum. Mileage of "$1.30/km" applies outside the regular service area (north of Mangawhai or south of the Auckland harbour bridge). The firm's services include heat pumps: "Our heat-pump options include single room, multiroom and ducted systems." The fee is explicitly additive, not credited to the repair.Warkworth / greater AucklandPublished rate
public holiday"Call-out fee for holidays*: $500""One-off fee for attending on public holiday; regular after-hours rate for work carried out applies on top of this" — i.e. the $500 buys attendance only, and the $132/hr after-hours rate with its two-hour minimum is then charged in addition. A second $500 line, "Davco Christmas break $500", extends the same holiday call-out fee across the Christmas–New Year office closedown: "The Davco office generally closes for one to two weeks over the Christmas - New Year period. During this time we operate a skeleton staff on-call, and holiday call out fee and after-hours rates apply." All rates exclude GST.Warkworth / greater AucklandPublished rate
After-hours"$180.00 + GST for Call Out (including the first hour) per person" plus "$75.00 + GST for every hour after that per person"Listed under "AFTER HOURS (Anytime outside our normal operating hours)", against standard rates of "$130.00 plus GST Standard Call Out Fee (including the first hour) per person" and "$75.00 + GST an hour per fully registered electrician after the first hour". Working hours are given as "Open 24/7 Monday-Sunday". Because the call-out fee includes the first hour of labour, it is effectively a minimum charge rather than a fee credited against a separate repair price. The firm's service list includes "Heat Pumps & Ducted Systems" and "Ventilation, Extraction & Heat Transfer". A travel charge of "$10.50 + GST for the general West Auckland area" or "$1.00 + GST per KM outside of this area" applies on top. GST-exclusive.West AucklandPublished rate
public holiday"$300.00 + GST for callout (including the first hour) per person" plus "$75.00 + GST for every hour after that per person"The company's rate card combines the two premium tiers into one heading, "PUBLIC HOLIDAY & EMERGENCY", so the same $300 + GST call-out applies to a public holiday and to a job classified as an emergency — 2.3x the standard $130 + GST call-out and 1.7x the $180 + GST after-hours call-out. The first hour of labour is included in the call-out fee; the hourly rate after the first hour ($75.00 + GST) is unchanged across all three tiers, so the entire premium sits in the call-out fee.West AucklandPublished rate
After-hours"After hours call out charges (Weekdays 5pm-7am. Saturday & Sunday) $150 + GST. Labour will be charged at time and a half the hourly rate"The one figure covers both after-hours and weekend attendance — the company's own bracket groups "Weekdays 5pm-7am" with "Saturday & Sunday" under a single charge. On top of the $150 + GST call-out, labour is uplifted from the standard "Electrician hourly rate: $100.00 + GST" to time and a half. Public holidays are not priced on the page: "Public holiday call outs $POA" (price on application). Vehicle charges are extra — "Zone 1 and Whangarei Heads: $20 + GST", "Outside of Zone 1 is charged $1.70 per km + GST", and "Travel time is charged at the hourly rate". HVAC is listed among the company's services. GST-exclusive; the call-out fee is additive, not credited.Whangārei / Mangawhai (Northland)Published rate
After-hours"Air Conditioning Technician $224 n/a n/a n/a" — $224 incl GST for the "Next three business days (Business hours)" column, and "n/a" in the "Business hours (within the hour)", "After hours (within the hour)" and "Public holiday" columnsNew Zealand's largest consumer motoring and home-assistance membership body publishes a regional rate table for its AA Home Response network, and Auckland is the only region where an Air Conditioning Technician appears at all. The trade is priced for scheduled business-hours attendance only — the after-hours and public-holiday cells are marked n/a — while the same Auckland table prices those tiers for other trades: "Plumber $191 / $223 / $337 / $614", "Electrician $174 / $212 / $312 / $347". "Tradesperson pricing includes one hour of labour (excluding standard lockouts - please see details below), GST, callout fees and travel." All prices are marked "Price (incl GST)". "Please note that business hours callouts for AA Home are between 8:00am and 4:30pm." This is the clearest published evidence that HVAC is not treated as a 24/7 emergency trade in New Zealand the way plumbing and electrical are.AucklandPublished rate
After-hours"$112.70 Per Hour including GST" with "Minimum Charge – 45min" — no separate after-hours or emergency premium is publishedA worked example of the NZ pattern where 24-hour HVAC attendance is advertised without any published surcharge. The company states "24/Hr Emergency Call Out for Electrical & Air Conditioning Services" and "Got an electrical emergency at home or at work? ... for urgent after-hours assistance", while its stated business hours are "Monday - Friday 7:30- 4:00" and its only published rate is the single GST-inclusive hourly figure above. The minimum charge "Includes Travel time from the Workshop"; mileage is "$1.61 Per Kilometer including GST" "From Workshop to Address & Return". Consumers therefore cannot tell from the published card what an out-of-hours air conditioning attendance will cost.Tauranga / Mount Maunganui / Bay of PlentyPublished rate
