Boiler: Repair or Replace? (2026 cost comparison)
The rule of thumb, from Consumer Reports: don't spend more than 50% of a comparable new unit on fixing the old one. For a boiler, that 50% line is about £1,100–£1,830 — a new unit runs £2,200–£3,660 and typically lasts 10–15 years. How this is built: we apply the 50% rule (Better Call Wes) — spend no more than half a comparable new unit's cost on a repair — with its lifespan corollary (replacement is favored once the unit is past the midpoint of its expected life and the quote tops 50%). Columns are your repair quote as a share of a new boiler (£2,200–£3,660); the £1,100–£1,830 and £660–£1,100 thresholds are just 50% and 30% of that range. Rows use the midpoint of the expected life (about 6 years — halfway through a typical 13-year lifespan) and the top of the sourced 10–15 years range (15 years). Nothing here is a per-unit price or a recommendation — it is a transparent reading of the rule.
This is the UK's dominant home heating appliance, not a secondary category as in the US file. Official DESNZ / English Housing Survey 2023-24 figures (see market_context_sources) put central heating in 93% of English homes and gas-fired main heating in about 86% (around 21.2 million households), so the boiler is the equipment the repair-or-replace decision is actually about. NOTE: the earlier gather cited a gardening blog (DIY Garden) relaying Boiler Guide and Statista for these national statistics; that third-hand chain was removed on 2026-07-20 and replaced with the DESNZ / English Housing Survey primary sources above, and the figures were updated to the primary values (93% central heating, 86% gas-fired main heating). The 10-15 year range is the manufacturers' own published expectation and is what the age-threshold heuristics above are calibrated against; note that this lifespan is SHORTER than the longest manufacturer guarantee on the same equipment (up to 12 years), which is why the guarantee-first rule matters so much in this market. No FX conversion has been applied to any figure and no US boiler lifespan has been carried over. The new_unit_gbp range GBP 2,200-3,660 is the bundled supplied-and-installed price of a replacement mains-gas combi boiler, taken from two independent UK sources re-verified live 2026-07-22 (Better Call Wes's mid-range-combi fitted floor and The Heating Hub's new-boiler ceiling, which also brackets Better Call Wes's premium-combi ceiling of 3,600); install_delivery_gbp is null because UK sources quote a single fitted total, not a separable equipment-vs-labour split, matching the US file's convention.

A newer boiler can cut energy and water use, which shifts the math on an older unit even when a repair is cheap: ENERGY STAR notes clothes washers over ~10 years and refrigerators over ~15 years are common efficiency-driven replacements.
