Emergency & After-Hours HVAC Repair Cost (UK, 2026)
Need a technician tonight, this weekend, or on a holiday? UK firms split between two conventions: a call-out fee plus hourly rate (commonly a £150–£220 out-of-hours call-out including the first hour of labour) and hourly-only pricing with a flat or zero call-out fee; national surveys put the average emergency call-out fee around £75–£123 and the out-of-hours hourly rate as high as £150–£270. But it is not universal: plenty of companies publish no after-hours premium at all. The figures below are shown verbatim, never averaged. Reviewed July 2026.
These surcharges sit on top of the standard service-call / diagnostic fee. See the UK service call & diagnostic fee guide for the base visit charge that the premium is added to.
After-hours & emergency service fees Observed
Evenings, weekends, and holidays can carry a surcharge — but far from always. National cost guides put the premium at:
- 2026 survey of UK gas engineers: "Gas engineers' hourly rates typically range between £45 and £120 per hour, with an average of £79.58" (up from a £60.36 average in 2025); "Gas engineers' day rates vary from around £225 to £750 per day, with an average of £433.85"; and "Emergency call-out fees typically range from £60 to £200, with an average of £123.13." The write-up adds that SOME engineers charge time-and-a-half on Saturdays and double rates on Sundays, some charge roughly £180 per hour for emergencies, and others do not offer emergency call-outs at all. NOTE ON AUTHORITY: the publisher is a commercial gas-training provider, not a trade body; the Saturday/Sunday uplift is reported as what some surveyed engineers do, not as an industry rule.. — a national cost guide
- UK emergency call-out guide: average emergency call-out fee "around £75", labour "typically starting at £60 per hour" with "a minimum of one hour's work", and a day rate "averaging at about £400 per day". Regional call-out fee / hourly rate / day rate table: London £90–£120 / £75–£95 / £450–£600; Bristol £75–£95 / £60–£75 / £380–£480; Manchester £75–£100 / £60–£75 / £380–£500; Edinburgh £75–£100 / £60–£75 / £380–£500. For boiler work needing an emergency heating engineer, call-out charges are given as "usually ranging from £75 to £120 before labour and parts", with ad-hoc boiler repair labour of £60–£180 across 1–3 hours and common replacement parts £20–£650.. — a national cost guide
- UK boiler repair call-out fees by provider type: independent Gas Safe engineer "£60 – £100"; British Gas for non-Homecare customers "£99+"; independent "Emergency/out-of-hours" call-out "£100 – £180". Prices in London and the South East are stated to run "roughly 15–25% higher than the national average", and the guide notes many independent engineers deduct the call-out fee from the repair cost if the customer proceeds. RECONCILIATION: the "£99+" British Gas figure is a floor; British Gas's own published one-off repair price is £295 (£280/£265 for members), with a £100 call-out fee applying only where the fault is not fixed or not covered (see the British Gas observation above). AUTHORITY NOTE: this publisher is a boiler-repair referral/lead-generation network that mass-publishes per-town landing pages, and its figures carry no underlying citation — weaker authority than the priced observations above.. — a national cost guide
- Rates database of Gas Safe registered heating engineers: "The average hourly rate for a heating engineer in the UK is £43" (labour only), with a range of £30 to £75 per hour by location and a London average of £60 per hour; "The average day rate for heating engineers is £259" (Pembrokeshire lowest at £199, London highest at £480); "The average gas engineer's call-out charge is £75", rising to £150 or more for attendance outside normal working hours.. — a national cost guide
Below are 12 published fee statements gathered 2026-07-19, rendered verbatim — never averaged into a single number. Sources are shown as a class, never by name (the full source registry lives on the methodology page). Many companies publish no after-hours premium at all.
| When | Published amount | What it covers | Where | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| After-hours | "Callouts in the evening or at weekends (inc. bank holidays) - £160" (£192 inc. VAT), against a standard "Domestic callout charge and diagnostic fee - £80" (£96 inc. VAT) | Published price list. The call-out charge is described as a callout and diagnostic fee; boiler repair labour is listed separately "from £80" (£96 inc. VAT). The page also states "any booking at 6pm and afterwards, or on a weekend, will be treated as out of hours, there is £60 callout fee on top of normal fees" and that "The charge is £60 for West Hertfordshire locals (within 10 miles from St Albans)" — the 10-mile figure defines who qualifies for the £60 charge, not the service area. | North London and Hertfordshire (serves up to ~15 miles from St Albans) | Published rate |
| After-hours | "Mon-Fri 5pm-9am" callout including 1 hour of labour: £220 inc. VAT; additional hours £150/hour (£75 per half hour). Standard Mon-Fri 8am-5pm equivalent: "Callout including up to 1 hour of labour" £110, additional labour £84/hour. | Published price list; "All prices inclusive of VAT." The out-of-hours call-out figure includes the first hour of labour, so it is not a separate diagnostic fee credited against a later repair — parts are extra. Same firm also lists "Routine Gas/LPG Boiler Service" £110 and a Landlord Gas Certificate at £110 for context. | Oxfordshire and Berkshire (firm based in Didcot) | Published rate |
| Weekend | "Weekends & Bank Holidays" callout including 1 hour of labour: £220 inc. VAT; additional hours £150/hour (£75 per half hour) | Same published price list as the weekday-evening tier above (same firm, same source page): the weekend/bank-holiday call-out is priced identically to the Mon-Fri 5pm-9am tier, i.e. this firm runs a two-tier (standard vs out-of-hours) structure rather than escalating separately for Sundays or holidays. Includes the first hour of labour; parts extra. | Oxfordshire and Berkshire (firm based in Didcot) | Published rate |
| After-hours | "8 AM to 5 PM Monday to Friday £70+VAT"; "Out with these hours, there is a call-out charge of £150+VAT" | Emergency call-out page for a boiler repair firm. Quoted ex-VAT (20% VAT is added). The page describes the visit as an attempt to "try our best to get your central heating system up and running", and states that where parts must be sourced for the following day the engineer will make "your boiler, radiators or burst pipe safe to ensure no further damage is caused" — i.e. the fee buys attendance and make-safe, not a guaranteed same-visit fix. | Glasgow, Scotland | Published rate |
| After-hours | Published rate table: "Out Of Hours" £99; "Emergency Out Call" £75; standard "Out Call" £40; "Gas/Heating" hourly rate £60; "Boiler Servicing" £72 | "All our prices that are quoted are plus VAT." A minimum charge of one hour applies, with work thereafter charged in half-hour increments; material charges are quoted in advance before work commences. The out-of-hours and emergency figures are call-out lines that sit on top of the hourly labour rate. | Birmingham, West Midlands | Published rate |
| After-hours | Call-out fee "£60" (stated to apply "24 hours a day, 7 days a week"); labour "from £45/hr" on weekdays (page defines weekday hours as Mon–Fri 8am–6pm) rising to "from £65/hr" out-of-hours (page defines out-of-hours as 6pm–8am and weekends) | The out-of-hours premium here is carried entirely by the hourly labour rate: the call-out fee itself is flat, with "No postcode loading, no night loading on the call-out itself." Parts are charged at "Cost + 10% handling". Published boiler/heating job bands on the same page include "Boiler not firing — diagnose + common fix: £90 – £220", "No heating / cold radiators fault-find: £90 – £200" and "Hot water / immersion fault: £90 – £220". Note the page's own introductory sentence quotes labour "from £95 hourly depending on the scope of the works", which is inconsistent with the detailed rate table beneath it. SOURCING NOTE: the page describes itself as a "Gas Safe registered London emergency plumber" but is a diversified home-services operator (plumbing, electrical, redecorating and general repairs), so the headline £60 fee is framed as an emergency plumber call-out; Gas Safe registration is asserted on the page but not independently verified against the Gas Safe Register here. | London | Published rate |
| public holiday | Bank holiday labour "from £75/hr" (the page states this premium covers Christmas Day, New Year's Day and bank holiday Mondays), against the same page's "from £45/hr" weekday and "from £65/hr" out-of-hours labour rates | Same published rate table and source page as the entry above (same firm); the flat £60 call-out fee is stated to apply "24 hours a day, 7 days a week", so the bank-holiday premium appears only in the hourly labour rate, and all three rates are published as "from" floors, not point prices. Parts at "Cost + 10% handling". Same Gas Safe / diversified-firm sourcing caveat as the entry above. | London | Published rate |
| Weekend | Published rate table (all charges plus VAT: "20% VAT is added to all below listed charges"): Mon–Fri 8am–6pm £100/hr; Mon–Fri 6pm–midnight £145/hr; Mon–Fri midnight–8am £180/hr; Sat–Sun 8am–6pm £145/hr; Sat–Sun 6pm–midnight £180/hr; Sat–Sun midnight–6am £270/hr | South East London heating/plumbing firm. The page states "Gas Safe registered engineers carry out all our gas and boiler work" and publishes a Gas Safe Reg. No. (657719), so this is a Gas-Safe-verified source for the out-of-hours ladder. Rates apply uniformly across plumbing, heating and gas work during each time band. The structure is a time-of-day / day-of-week hourly ladder rather than a call-out-plus-hourly model; no separately labelled bank-holiday rate is published (the Sat–Sun tiers are the highest published bands). | South East London | Published rate |
| Emergency | "£98 plus VAT per hour", with no call-out fee and "no same-day premium" | Gas Safe boiler repair page. The flat rate is stated to apply Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm — i.e. this firm avoids an out-of-hours surcharge by not trading outside those hours rather than by absorbing a night premium, which is a distinction worth drawing for readers comparing 'no surcharge' claims. Parts are "quoted before they are fitted", with a "12-month guarantee on labour and parts supplied"; the page states "Most boiler faults are diagnosed and put right within the first hour", making a typical repair "£98 plus VAT plus any parts". Coverage is all 32 London boroughs, the City of London, and TW, KT, CR and BR postcodes. Recorded as a no-surcharge structural example: it carries no genuine out-of-hours price point because the firm does not trade out of hours. | London | Published rate |
| After-hours | "We do not charge extra for evenings, weekends, or bank holidays." (no GBP rate published on the page) | Boiler repair service page. The firm publishes no hourly rate or call-out figure, offering instead a "transparent, fixed quote before any work begins". Recorded here as an observed UK example of the flat-rate marketing position, NOT as a price point — it carries no usable out-of-hours GBP figure. | London | Published rate |
| After-hours | "EmergencyMan don't charge a call-out fee. This means you're only charged for the time we actually spend on the premises", billed "at a fixed hourly rate no matter the day or time" (the hourly figure itself is not published) | Gas/heating/boiler repair page for a 24/7 operator — "available 24/7 — call any time, any day of the year" — with no differentiated night, weekend or bank-holiday tier stated. The page states "We only ever use Gas Safe Registered Engineers." Recorded as an observed no-surcharge structure; the absent hourly figure means it cannot be used as a price point. | Leeds, West Yorkshire | Published rate |
| Emergency | One-off fixed-price boiler repair "£295" (£280 for members, £265 for members with energy); "If our engineers can't fix it or the issue isn't covered (for example, a new cylinder or replacing a heat exchanger), a £100 call-out fee applies." | National operator's published one-off (non-cover-plan) breakdown repair price: a fixed price for the repair rather than a call-out-plus-hourly structure, with the £100 call-out fee applying only where the fault is not fixed or not covered (the page adds "You won't pay this if the repair is successful"). The operator states that same-day attendance is tied to an 11am cut-off, qualified on its own page as "Based on 2025 performance data, 80% of customers contacting by 11am received the same day service" — i.e. a likelihood, not a guarantee. The page publishes NO separate evening, weekend or bank-holiday premium, so this figure should be read as a same-day emergency benchmark and NOT as an out-of-hours rate. | United Kingdom (national) | Published rate |
