Sales tax on appliance repair

Repair labor is taxable here. Appliance repair is an explicitly enumerated taxable service in Texas. Repair of tangible personal property (which residential appliances are) is governed by Comptroller Rule 3.292 (34 TAC Sec. 3.292): a repairman is a retailer who must obtain a permit and collect sales tax on the ENTIRE charge — materials, parts, AND labor. Unlike real-property repair/remodeling, the separated-vs-lump-sum distinction does NOT exempt the labor: repair labor on appliances is taxable either way (in a separated contract the labor is still taxable as part of the total charge; in a lump-sum contract the repairman collects tax on the full amount). Licensing & certification

No single statewide "appliance repair technician" license exists in Texas, and Texas has no general contractor license or dollar-threshold that applies to appliance repair jobs — regulation is trade-specific. FEDERAL (EPA Section 608): Any technician who maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of refrigerant-containing appliances (refrigerators, freezers, room/central AC) must hold EPA Section 608 certification under 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F (Clean Air Act) — this is the universal baseline for any repair that opens a sealed refrigerant system.
