How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. Value brands — Kalley, Midea, Hisense and TCL — carry the cheapest, most widely stocked parts; Haceb, Challenger, LG, Samsung and York form the mainstream core of the Colombian market; premium makers — Carrier, Trane, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Bosch — use pricier components, almost always imported and sold through the manufacturer's official channel. Boiler ignition fault / lockout: what usually causes it? Estimated
-
Cleaning the ignition electrode and resetting the unit
Pro recommended$110.000–$260.000 COP
The unit tries to light, detects no flame and locks out. On Colombian gas water heaters with electronic ignition — the forced-draught models widely used in apartments — the usual culprit is a dirty or worn spark electrode, and the specialist Bogota workshop lists 'problems with the automatic ignition' among its everyday faults. On price it is worth being transparent: no Colombian company publishes a specific band for the electrode, so the total is built from the two figures the gas trade in Cali does publish, the $50,000 creditable visit and the $60,000 to $120,000 labour band for the equivalent work on the pilot assembly, plus the spare. Resetting a lockout without correcting the cause is dangerous: it is work for a technician competent in gas.
-
Checking the electrical point and the breaker feeding the water heater
Pro recommended$85.000–$210.000 COP
Before condemning the ignition module the cheap causes have to be ruled out: many forced-draught water heaters go silent because of the electrical point, the breaker or a loose joint, not because of the appliance. In Colombia that check is done by the electrician or by the technician himself if he is RETIE-certified. SomosTecnicos publishes $60,000 to $120,000 in Cali for the labour to check and change a breaker and $80,000 to $150,000 for a new electrical point with cabling back to the board, and states that its technicians are certified under RETIE, RETILAP and NTC 2050; that is the band carried over here. It is not DIY: RETIE reserves any work on the fixed electrical installation to technically and legally competent personnel.

How much is a service-call fee for boiler repair?
Most Colombian companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of $30.000–$80.000 COP, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Colombia's standard 19% VAT (IVA) applies to air-conditioning and heating repair services (Tax Statute, art. 468). However, small providers registered as "no responsables del IVA" (formerly the simplified regime) do not charge it, and many independent technicians invoice without VAT — so treat 19% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a boiler, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a boiler — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
Prices are department (departamento)-level estimates based on department-level income data (DANE Gran Encuesta Integrada de Hogares — GEIH, Departmental Monetary Poverty 2024), not fake city precision.
