The indoor unit's coil ices over when it is short of air — a dirty filter, a blocked return grille, a weak fan — or short of refrigerant. The technician defrosts, cleans and changes filters, and only if the ice comes back does he measure pressures to rule out a leak. It is one of the most frequent call-outs of July and August in Spain. The unit is reached in the false ceiling and, if pressures have to be measured, an F-gas handling certificate is required.

If the ice comes back after cleaning and changing filters, what is wrong is the charge: with the refrigerant low the coil runs too cold and freezes even though the air is circulating properly. The technician takes high- and low-side readings, adjusts the charge by weight and looks for the leak, because a machine does not consume refrigerant. In Spain this work is billed at €121 to €242 including VAT. Connecting to the refrigerant circuit requires an F-gas handling certificate (RD 115/2017).

How much is a service-call fee for air handler repair?
Most Spanish companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €36–€97, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Spain's standard 21% VAT (IVA) applies to heating and cooling repair services, and consumer prices are shown VAT-inclusive. A repair carried out in a dwelling can fall to the 10% reduced rate (Spanish VAT Act art. 91.Uno.2.10º) when three conditions hold at once: the customer is a private individual, the dwelling was completed more than two years ago, and the materials supplied by the firm are under 40% of the tax base.
