On an on/off split, a compressor that hums without starting is usually accusing its capacitor, not itself. The part is worth €10 to €50 at Spanish shops and the job takes half an hour: €97 to €218 including VAT. Ruling it out is essential before proposing a compressor change that almost nobody in Spain actually goes through with. On inverter units this part no longer exists as such and the equivalent fault is in the power module. The service company changes it.

This is the repair almost nobody does: on a mid-range wall split the compressor costs more than half the price of a new machine installed, which is why the usual course in Spain is to replace the unit. The real Valencia quote published by a Spanish guide breaks it down like this: technical visit and diagnosis (deductible) €55, R-410A recovery €70, compressor €240, five hours of labour €280, vacuum and full charge €90, and a repair certificate with waste handling €35, adding up to €770 and, with 21% VAT, €932. It requires certified refrigerant recovery, brazing and recharging: only a registered company with F-gas certified staff.

How much is a service-call fee for ductless mini-split repair?
Most Spanish companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €36–€97, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Spain's standard 21% VAT (IVA) applies to heating and cooling repair services, and consumer prices are shown VAT-inclusive. A repair carried out in a dwelling can fall to the 10% reduced rate (Spanish VAT Act art. 91.Uno.2.10º) when three conditions hold at once: the customer is a private individual, the dwelling was completed more than two years ago, and the materials supplied by the firm are under 40% of the tax base. Labour-heavy jobs with little material often meet all three, so 21% is the standard rate but not always the effective rate on the invoice — treat it as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a ductless mini-split, or should you replace it?
