If the smell is mild and only appears at start-up, basic servicing is often enough: filter cleaning, a visual inspection and a functional test, which in Spain costs €50 to €80, plus the disinfection, billed at €20 to €50 when added to the visit. It is what is worth trying before booking a full sanitising treatment with the fan wheel stripped out. The machine is opened and chemical products are used, so the maintenance company does it.

The musty smell when the air conditioning comes on comes from the biofilm that forms on the coil and in the tray when the unit does not dry out after it stops. Washing the filters is not enough: the fan wheel has to come out, a dedicated product be applied and the parts rinsed. It is a service in heavy demand in Spain at the start of each summer, and firms offer it either as a full service (€120 to €180) or as a disinfection added to the cleaning (€20 to €50). It requires dismantling the unit and using chemical products, so it is not a user task.

How much is a service-call fee for ductless mini-split repair?
Most Spanish companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €36–€97, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Spain's standard 21% VAT (IVA) applies to heating and cooling repair services, and consumer prices are shown VAT-inclusive. A repair carried out in a dwelling can fall to the 10% reduced rate (Spanish VAT Act art. 91.Uno.2.10º) when three conditions hold at once: the customer is a private individual, the dwelling was completed more than two years ago, and the materials supplied by the firm are under 40% of the tax base. Labour-heavy jobs with little material often meet all three, so 21% is the standard rate but not always the effective rate on the invoice — treat it as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a ductless mini-split, or should you replace it?
