Air-source heat pumps (aerotermia) have taken off in Spain as a replacement for oil and gas boilers, and their most common fault is also the cheapest: a sensor that reads wrongly and stops the machine from starting the heating cycle. The part costs very little; what you pay for is the diagnosis and getting at the unit. Although the sensor does not touch the refrigerant circuit, the machine is opened and recommissioned by staff holding an F-gas handling certificate from a registered company.

If the heat pump runs but gives little heating output, it has usually lost refrigerant charge through a joint brazed on site. The gas itself is cheap — R-32 costs €15 to €30/kg and a typical domestic charge is between 0.6 and 1.5 kg — so the quote is almost entirely leak tracing, recovery, vacuum and hours. Working on the refrigerant circuit requires an F-gas handling certificate and a registered company under RD 115/2017: it is under no circumstances a user task.

How much is a service-call fee for heat pump repair?
Most Spanish companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €36–€97, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Spain's standard 21% VAT (IVA) applies to heating and cooling repair services, and consumer prices are shown VAT-inclusive. A repair carried out in a dwelling can fall to the 10% reduced rate (Spanish VAT Act art. 91.Uno.2.10º) when three conditions hold at once: the customer is a private individual, the dwelling was completed more than two years ago, and the materials supplied by the firm are under 40% of the tax base. Labour-heavy jobs with little material often meet all three, so 21% is the standard rate but not always the effective rate on the invoice — treat it as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a heat pump, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a heat pump — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
