How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. Parts prices vary by brand, and they say nothing about how good a unit is. The reference level here is Mitsubishi Electric, whose control boards average €805.18. Pricier boards were observed for CTC, LG and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, cheaper ones for Panasonic, Viessmann, Fujitsu, Thermia, Bosch and Toshiba. For many brands — among them Daikin, NIBE, Samsung and Vaillant, and the Finnish makers Jäspi, Gebwell, Lämpöässä, Oilon, Vallox, Enervent and Ariterm — no publicly priced control board is available, so no price difference is claimed either way. The price observations come from a Nordic euro parts storefront, not from a Finnish shop's price list. Pick a tier for a class-typical estimate, or a specific Finnish brand to override it.

Air Handler frozen evaporator coil: what usually causes it? Estimated
-
Investigating icing of the core, changing the filters and adjusting the defrost settings
Pro recommended€155–€450
Icing of the heat-recovery core is the most common winter problem for a ventilation unit in the Finnish climate: when it is tens of degrees below zero outside, the moisture in the extract air freezes in the core and the unit drops the supply-fan output because of the frost protection. During the visit the filters are changed at a cost of EUR 18.90–244.90, the core is cleaned and the frost-protection and defrost settings are adjusted. The price is hourly work at EUR 76.56 an hour plus the service-vehicle charge, and the minimum charge is two hours, that is EUR 153.12. A wrongly set unit ices up again with the very next cold spell, so it is worth documenting the settings.

Repairing the pre-heater battery or the frost-protection control
Pro recommended€300–€900
If the core ices up repeatedly, the fault is usually in the electric pre-heater battery on the supply air or in its control. No separate consumer prices are published for these parts in Finland, so the top of the range reflects the fact that in small units renewing the whole appliance at EUR 299–449 is often a cheaper option than ordering the part, whereas in large units costing EUR 2,649–5,799.90 the part is always worth repairing. The job includes adjusting the control settings and a test run in frosty weather. The electrical connection of the pre-heater battery is fixed electrical installation work and requires a contractor holding electrical competence.

How much is a service-call fee for air handler repair?
Most Finnish companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €30–€155, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT (ALV, 25.5%) may or may not be included: many small heating and ventilation firms and sole traders fall under Finland's small-business VAT exemption threshold (turnover up to €20,000 a year, the limit in force since 1 January 2025) and charge no VAT — so treat 25.5% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on. No reduced rate covers heating-equipment repair. Finland's household tax credit (kotitalousvähennys) does not reduce the invoice; it is claimed later in your own tax return.
Is it worth repairing a air handler, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a air handler — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
Prices are region (maakunta)-level estimates based on regional wage data (Statistics Finland, Palkkarakenne 2024), not fake city precision. Shopping in the U.S.? See the U.S. version (USD).
