Before replacing the board it is worth establishing whether the problem is software or electronics. Updating the control system of a ground-source heat pump costs EUR 110 and a separate fault-finding visit EUR 210. Frequently recurring defrost cycles are often due to a wrong parameter setting or outdated software, in which case the board does not need replacing at all. In Finland the installed base is young, so manufacturers' software updates are available for most models. The visit is ordered from a refrigeration company authorised by the appliance brand, because the manufacturer's service software is needed for the diagnostics.

If the board has been damaged, for example by lightning or moisture, it is replaced. The published price for a control board is EUR 150–350, and the labour share lifts the total considerably higher; in a ground-source heat pump, renewing the control system has been published separately as a EUR 500–1,000 job. The top of the range means a large ground-source or air-to-water heat pump in which the board cannot be obtained separately and the whole control unit is renewed. The price lists are published for air-to-air heat pumps, but the work and the class of part are the same in the outdoor unit of an air-to-water heat pump. After the change the appliance is programmed and test-run, and the work is done by a refrigeration company registered with Tukes.

How much is a service-call fee for heat pump repair?
Most Finnish companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €30–€155, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT (ALV, 25.5%) may or may not be included: many small heating and ventilation firms and sole traders fall under Finland's small-business VAT exemption threshold (turnover up to €20,000 a year, the limit in force since 1 January 2025) and charge no VAT — so treat 25.5% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on. No reduced rate covers heating-equipment repair. Finland's household tax credit (kotitalousvähennys) does not reduce the invoice; it is claimed later in your own tax return.
Is it worth repairing a heat pump, or should you replace it?
