How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. Parts prices vary by brand, and they say nothing about how good a unit is. The reference level here is Mitsubishi Electric, whose control boards average €805.18. Pricier boards were observed for CTC, LG and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, cheaper ones for Panasonic, Viessmann, Fujitsu, Thermia, Bosch and Toshiba. For many brands — among them Daikin, NIBE, Samsung and Vaillant, and the Finnish makers Jäspi, Gebwell, Lämpöässä, Oilon, Vallox, Enervent and Ariterm — no publicly priced control board is available, so no price difference is claimed either way. Finland's climate makes defrosting the most common trouble spot on a heat pump: weather swinging either side of zero freezes the outdoor unit's evaporator quickly, and if the defrost sensor or the outdoor temperature sensor reads wrongly, the appliance stays in the defrost cycle and no longer heats. A service inspection costs EUR 149 and repairing sensor faults EUR 80–150. Exactly the same work is done in exactly the same way on the outdoor unit of an air-to-water heat pump and of an air-to-air heat pump, and the price lists are published for air-to-air heat pumps, of which Finland has the most; a ground-source heat pump has no defrost function at all, because the heat is taken from the ground. Replacing the sensor requires opening the appliance, and the work is done by a refrigeration company entered in the Tukes register.

The other common reason is that the defrost water cannot get away: a bed of ice builds up under the evaporator when the base-plate drain or the condensate tray is blocked or the outdoor unit has been mounted too low, down in the snow. A deep clean of the outdoor unit is then ordered, costing EUR 100–200, or a combined wash of the indoor and outdoor units at EUR 200–450. The top of the range is reached when the ice has to be thawed carefully and the outdoor unit lifted onto a new bracket. In Finland this work is clearly concentrated in winter. The refrigerant-circuit pressures are checked in connection with the cleaning, so the work is done by a refrigeration company.

How much is a service-call fee for heat pump repair?
Most Finnish companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €30–€155, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT (ALV, 25.5%) may or may not be included: many small heating and ventilation firms and sole traders fall under Finland's small-business VAT exemption threshold (turnover up to €20,000 a year, the limit in force since 1 January 2025) and charge no VAT — so treat 25.5% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on. No reduced rate covers heating-equipment repair. Finland's household tax credit (kotitalousvähennys) does not reduce the invoice; it is claimed later in your own tax return.
Is it worth repairing a heat pump, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a heat pump — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
