A dripping boiler most often comes from a safety valve that is discharging or from hardened seals, and not from the heat exchanger body. Overhauling the safety group and the seals is settled at between €100 and €200 in one to two hours. The heating engineer then checks the expansion vessel, because a valve that regularly spits almost always signals a dead vessel upstream. Opening the appliance and re-pressurising it call for a heating engineer's tools.

A heavy and thankfully rare case: a holed heat exchanger body leaks while running and cannot be repaired. The part costs €150 to €900 on gas and condensing models, the fitted total being able to exceed a thousand euros by a wide margin on boilers that are hard to get at. Beyond fifteen years, the heating engineer quotes a complete replacement of the appliance alongside. Note that since 1 March 2025 the supply and installation of a fossil-fuel boiler have come under 20% VAT, whereas repair stays at 10%, which weighs in the decision.

How much is a service-call fee for boiler repair?
Most French companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €80–€170, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT on French home heating and cooling work is usually the 10% reduced rate for repair and maintenance in a dwelling completed more than two years ago, not the 20% standard rate; some energy-performance improvement work can fall to 5.5%, depending on the equipment fitted and the rules in force. Many independent installers and micro-entrepreneurs also fall under France's small-business VAT exemption (franchise en base de TVA, €37,500 threshold for services) and charge no VAT at all — their invoices carry the note "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI". Prices displayed to consumers in France are quoted TTC (toutes taxes comprises — all taxes included).
Is it worth repairing a boiler, or should you replace it?
