How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. Value-tier brands — Ariston, Chaffoteaux and Auer — carry some of the lowest parts factors; Saunier Duval, ELM Leblanc, De Dietrich, Chappée, Atlantic, Thermor and Riello form the mainstream core of the French heating market, with Saunier Duval as the price anchor for this list; premium makers — Vaillant, Frisquet and Viessmann — source mainly through the manufacturer's own network (pièces d'origine). On the heat-pump and split-system side, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Toshiba sit in the premium tier, Panasonic, LG and Atlantic in the mainstream core, and Airwell at the value end. Boiler no hot water: what usually causes it? Estimated
-
Replacing the seized 3-way valve
Pro recommended€160–€340
On a combination gas boiler, hot radiators and cold water at the tap almost always point to the 3-way valve left in the heating position. Replacement comes to €150 to €300 with parts and labour included depending on the boiler model, and it is one of the most common jobs in French combination boiler repair. The work takes one to two hours with a drain-down of the heat exchanger body. Opening the appliance and the draining call for a heating engineer's tools.
-
Descaling or replacing the domestic hot water plate heat exchanger
Pro recommended€220–€450
The second cause of no hot water on a combination boiler, very common in hard-water regions such as the Paris basin. A chemical descale of the plate heat exchanger is tried first; for replacement, the common references retail at €92.32 to €176.29 including VAT at a French spare-parts seller, and the fitted total rises to about €400 with parts and labour included. A failing domestic hot water sensor, at €80 to €150, produces the same symptom and is checked before committing to removing the heat exchanger. Removal requires draining the domestic hot water circuit and new seals on reassembly.

How much is a service-call fee for boiler repair?
Most French companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €80–€170, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT on French home heating and cooling work is usually the 10% reduced rate for repair and maintenance in a dwelling completed more than two years ago, not the 20% standard rate; some energy-performance improvement work can fall to 5.5%, depending on the equipment fitted and the rules in force. Many independent installers and micro-entrepreneurs also fall under France's small-business VAT exemption (franchise en base de TVA, €37,500 threshold for services) and charge no VAT at all — their invoices carry the note "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI". Prices displayed to consumers in France are quoted TTC (toutes taxes comprises — all taxes included).
Is it worth repairing a boiler, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a boiler — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
Prices are region-level estimates based on regional wage data (Insee, Tous salariés 2023 all-employees base), not fake city precision. Shopping in the U.S.? See the U.S. version (USD). In Canada?
