This only concerns older gas boilers with a permanent pilot light, still numerous in the French rental stock but absent from the condensing models sold today. A pilot light that goes out as soon as the button is released points to the thermocouple in the vast majority of cases. On these appliances the part is most often bought as a manufacturer's original rather than as a universal model: allow up to €90.88 for a Vaillant 171027 reference at a French retailer, against €7.60 for a universal model. Access on a floor-standing boiler lengthens the removal, the labour being recorded in May 2026 at between €70 and €130 an hour. The dismantling touches the gas safety shut-off component: the seal must be rechecked on reassembly, which requires a properly equipped heating engineer.

Before changing the part, the heating engineer cleans the injector and the pilot burner assembly, often fouled with dust on older appliances. If the pilot light then holds, the job is limited to the call-out charge and an hour of labour, within the range of a routine call-out of €80 to €190 including VAT. If it goes out again despite a new thermocouple, the gas valve assembly's magnet head is at fault and the bill changes scale. Removing the burner assembly reopens the gas circuit and requires a leak check on reassembly: it is a heating engineer's task.

How much is a service-call fee for boiler repair?
Most French companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €80–€170, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT on French home heating and cooling work is usually the 10% reduced rate for repair and maintenance in a dwelling completed more than two years ago, not the 20% standard rate; some energy-performance improvement work can fall to 5.5%, depending on the equipment fitted and the rules in force. Many independent installers and micro-entrepreneurs also fall under France's small-business VAT exemption (franchise en base de TVA, €37,500 threshold for services) and charge no VAT at all — their invoices carry the note "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI".
