How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. Value-tier brands — Ariston, Chaffoteaux and Auer — carry some of the lowest parts factors; Saunier Duval, ELM Leblanc, De Dietrich, Chappée, Atlantic, Thermor and Riello form the mainstream core of the French heating market, with Saunier Duval as the price anchor for this list; premium makers — Vaillant, Frisquet and Viessmann — source mainly through the manufacturer's own network (pièces d'origine). On the heat-pump and split-system side, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Toshiba sit in the premium tier, Panasonic, LG and Atlantic in the mainstream core, and Airwell at the value end. Thermostat & Controls smart thermostat installation: what usually causes it? Estimated
-
Supply and installation of a wireless connected thermostat on a gas boiler, with the receiver wired to the terminal block
Pro recommended€220–€580
This is today the most requested controls installation in France, driven by decree no. 2023-444 as amended, which requires automatic room-by-room temperature control from 1 January 2027 in new build and from 1 January 2030 in existing dwellings. The hardware runs from €100 to €300, a Netatmo NTH01 retailing at €149.90 including VAT in DIY superstores, and the fitting from €100 to €300. The manufacturer presents the device as self-installable, but on a boiler the receiver is wired to the gas appliance's terminal block: that connection is entrusted to a qualified heating engineer, the one to whom the regulations already entrust the boiler's compulsory annual service. The PG label, Professionnel du Gaz, is a voluntary qualification born of the merger of the former PGN, PGP and PMG: it allows the installer to issue the certificate of conformity himself, a document that covers a new gas installation or a major modification to one and not the wiring of a thermostat receiver. On electric heating, the constraint is no longer the gas but the consumer unit: the programmer is wired to the heating circuit on a dedicated breaker and to the radiators' pilot wire, the unit costing €30 to €100 in a DIY store, €50 to €250 for the more complete models, and the fitting €150 to €300. On an air-to-water heat pump, no gas constraint comes into play, the controls being those of the machine's manufacturer. The 5.5% VAT rate applies when the fitting is done by a professional in a dwelling completed more than two years ago. A CEE energy-saving bonus may moreover be paid for fitting a control system: it is granted separately, is not deducted from the prices shown here, and going through an RGE-certified tradesperson is a condition for receiving the grants.

Fitting a modulating thermostat of the boiler's own brand (OpenTherm or eBus) with setting of the heating curve
Pro recommended€400–€980
On a condensing boiler, the real gain comes from modulating controls of the same brand and not from simple on/off control: installers' catalogues show Atlantic's Navilink 128 from €393 including VAT, Bosch's EasyControl CT 200 from €488 including VAT, Saunier Duval's Exacontrol E7R from €431 including VAT and De Dietrich's AD 303 from €574 including VAT. The fitting comes closer to the top of the tradesperson's range, up to €880 including VAT, because the bus has to be wired, the heating curve set and an outdoor sensor often fitted. The work is on the gas appliance and is entrusted to a qualified heating engineer; the PG label remains a voluntary qualification, useful because it allows the installer to issue the certificate of conformity himself when a gas installation is created or substantially modified.

How much is a service-call fee for thermostat & controls repair?
Most French companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €80–€170, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT on French home heating and cooling work is usually the 10% reduced rate for repair and maintenance in a dwelling completed more than two years ago, not the 20% standard rate; some energy-performance improvement work can fall to 5.5%, depending on the equipment fitted and the rules in force. Many independent installers and micro-entrepreneurs also fall under France's small-business VAT exemption (franchise en base de TVA, €37,500 threshold for services) and charge no VAT at all — their invoices carry the note "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI". Prices displayed to consumers in France are quoted TTC (toutes taxes comprises — all taxes included).
Is it worth repairing a thermostat & controls, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a thermostat & controls — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
Prices are region-level estimates based on regional wage data (Insee, Tous salariés 2023 all-employees base), not fake city precision. Shopping in the U.S.? See the U.S. version (USD). In Canada?
