It is the €100 to €330 including VAT of the one-hour heating repair fixed price, call-out included, €120 to €300 in Paris and €90 to €150 in the provinces, that explains the top of the range once a professional does come out. After changing the batteries the transmitter and the receiver often have to be re-paired, which the instruction leaflet sets out.

When the display stays dark with new batteries, it is the thermostat's electronics that have failed, an ordinary fault on models installed ten to fifteen years ago. The hardware runs from about twenty euros for a manual model to €50-100 for a programmable one, and the fitting is billed at €100 to €200 according to the French guides. On a boiler, the replacement means reconnecting the control wire to the gas appliance's terminal block, a connection to be entrusted to a qualified heating engineer; on electric heating, it is the connection to the consumer unit and to the pilot wire that is an electrician's business, for a unit that is often cheaper, €30 to €100. In both cases the operation touches a fixed installation, which takes it out of DIY territory.

How much is a service-call fee for thermostat & controls repair?
Most French companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €80–€170, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT on French home heating and cooling work is usually the 10% reduced rate for repair and maintenance in a dwelling completed more than two years ago, not the 20% standard rate; some energy-performance improvement work can fall to 5.5%, depending on the equipment fitted and the rules in force. Many independent installers and micro-entrepreneurs also fall under France's small-business VAT exemption (franchise en base de TVA, €37,500 threshold for services) and charge no VAT at all — their invoices carry the note "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI". Prices displayed to consumers in France are quoted TTC (toutes taxes comprises — all taxes included).
