How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. On parts, the brand differences that actually show up in Italy are on the control boards. The lowest prices observed at Italian spares retailers belong to Immergas, Biasi and Savio, Unical, Baxi, Vaillant and Bosch (Junkers); Beretta and Riello, which share the same electronics, are the reference line for the table; above the reference sit Ariston, Ferroli, Hermann Saunier Duval, Sime and, highest of all, Chaffoteaux. On air conditioning the only published Italian price that could be verified is the LG board: for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic, still the priciest brands for parts, the figure shown is their band median. Nine times out of ten the puddle under the boiler comes from the discharge pipe of the safety valve, which either opens at 3 bar or no longer reseats because limescale has settled under the seal. Parts and seals cost a few tens of euros and the bill is dominated by the call-out plus barely an hour of labour: trade guides give a minimum cost of 40-60 EUR and an hourly rate of 65-72 EUR, service-centre tariffs a minimum call-out of around 90 EUR. Be careful not to confuse cause with effect: if the valve discharges continuously, the broken part is the expansion vessel. Here too a gas appliance is opened, so a firm qualified under DM 37/2008 is required.

Replacing the primary heat exchanger or the holed hydraulic block

The leak that wets the wall behind the boiler, or that drops the pressure every day, comes from the hydraulic block or from a corroded primary exchanger. The primary costs 150-500 EUR, the labour 80-200 EUR and a complete replacement 200-700 EUR; on condensing boilers more than ten years old the quote slides easily towards the top of the band and the technician sets the repair against replacing the appliance. Note that this same part reappears under no-hot-water when what gives way is the secondary plate exchanger, which costs about half. Work on a gas circuit and on water under pressure: a firm qualified under DM 37/2008, with a declaration of conformity.

How much is a service-call fee for boiler repair?
Most Italian companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €35–€80, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Standard VAT (IVA) of 22% applies to standalone heating and air-conditioning repair services in Italy (DPR 633/1972); a reduced 10% rate can apply when the job counts as ordinary or extraordinary maintenance of a residential property (Law 488/1999 art. 7). Watch the 'beni significativi' cap: the decree of 29 December 1999 lists boilers and air-conditioning equipment by name, so when the boiler or the air conditioner is worth more than half the agreed price, the 10% rate only covers the difference between the total job value and the value of that item. Many small sole-trader firms also use the flat-rate scheme (regime forfettario, €85,000 turnover threshold) and charge no VAT — so treat 22% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a boiler, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a boiler — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
