How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. On parts, the brand differences that actually show up in Italy are on the control boards. The lowest prices observed at Italian spares retailers belong to Immergas, Biasi and Savio, Unical, Baxi, Vaillant and Bosch (Junkers); Beretta and Riello, which share the same electronics, are the reference line for the table; above the reference sit Ariston, Ferroli, Hermann Saunier Duval, Sime and, highest of all, Chaffoteaux. On air conditioning the only published Italian price that could be verified is the LG board: for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic, still the priciest brands for parts, the figure shown is their band median. This is the most trivial and the most frequent cause of a cold house in November: the gauge is below 1 bar and the boiler has locked itself out on safety. Opening the filling loop until the gauge reads 1.2-1.5 bar and pressing reset is an operation the boiler manual describes to the owner, and it touches neither the gas circuit nor the fixed electrical connections, so it can be done alone at zero cost. Call a technician instead and the bill does not start at zero: published tariffs show a minimum call-out of around 90 EUR, covering the call-out fee, the travel and the first hour of labour. If the pressure falls again within a few days, the problem is not the top-up but the expansion vessel or a leak, and it is the losing-pressure entry that describes that job.

Replacing the seized circulating pump

The second classic cause: the boiler fires, the hot water is hot but the radiators stay cold because the circulating pump has seized after standing idle all summer. The pump costs 100-300 EUR depending on brand and head, and price lists give 300-500 EUR for a complete replacement, peaking at 700 EUR when the boiler is recessed or awkwardly sited; one trade guide puts a pump failure on its own at 250-300 EUR. The job opens up the boiler body and requires partly draining the circuit and re-establishing the gas seal and the combustion settings, so it is reserved to a firm qualified under DM 37/2008, which issues the declaration of conformity: it is not a DIY job. A loose spare part is not a 'bene significativo' (significant good), so the whole invoice stays at 10% VAT if the property is residential.

How much is a service-call fee for boiler repair?
Most Italian companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €35–€80, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Standard VAT (IVA) of 22% applies to standalone heating and air-conditioning repair services in Italy (DPR 633/1972); a reduced 10% rate can apply when the job counts as ordinary or extraordinary maintenance of a residential property (Law 488/1999 art. 7). Watch the 'beni significativi' cap: the decree of 29 December 1999 lists boilers and air-conditioning equipment by name, so when the boiler or the air conditioner is worth more than half the agreed price, the 10% rate only covers the difference between the total job value and the value of that item. Many small sole-trader firms also use the flat-rate scheme (regime forfettario, €85,000 turnover threshold) and charge no VAT — so treat 22% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a boiler, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a boiler — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
