How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. On parts, the brand differences that actually show up in Italy are on the control boards. The lowest prices observed at Italian spares retailers belong to Immergas, Biasi and Savio, Unical, Baxi, Vaillant and Bosch (Junkers); Beretta and Riello, which share the same electronics, are the reference line for the table; above the reference sit Ariston, Ferroli, Hermann Saunier Duval, Sime and, highest of all, Chaffoteaux. On air conditioning the only published Italian price that could be verified is the LG board: for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic, still the priciest brands for parts, the figure shown is their band median. On a ducted system too the first thing to rule out is that the compressor is sound and the fault lies in the power electronics. The board costs 120-300 EUR and the replacement is listed at 150-280 EUR, but on ducted systems the time to reach the outdoor unit has to be added, often on the roof, with labour quoted in the price lists at 30-60 EUR per hour plus surcharges for scaffolding or an aerial platform. It is a check always worth making, because it costs half what the compressor does and in many cases it solves the problem. An F-Gas certified firm.

This is the highest quote in domestic air conditioning: national guides quote 400-700 EUR already for a 9,000 BTU split and service-centre price lists 350-600 EUR, while on a ducted system the compressor size and the length of the lines push towards the top of the band. Within that total the compressor is worth 250-400 EUR and the rest is labour: three to six hours of work which, at the 30-60 EUR per hour shown by Italian price lists, plus the technician's visit, fill exactly the difference. The job includes gas recovery, brazing, a new filter drier, a deep vacuum and recharging by weight. On systems over ten years old almost no technician recommends it: when the part exceeds 40% of the machine's value the repair no longer makes economic sense, and replacing the whole appliance triggers the 'beni significativi' (significant goods) rule with the excess at 22%. How much is a service-call fee for central air conditioning repair?
Most Italian companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €35–€80, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Standard VAT (IVA) of 22% applies to standalone heating and air-conditioning repair services in Italy (DPR 633/1972); a reduced 10% rate can apply when the job counts as ordinary or extraordinary maintenance of a residential property (Law 488/1999 art. 7). Watch the 'beni significativi' cap: the decree of 29 December 1999 lists boilers and air-conditioning equipment by name, so when the boiler or the air conditioner is worth more than half the agreed price, the 10% rate only covers the difference between the total job value and the value of that item. Many small sole-trader firms also use the flat-rate scheme (regime forfettario, €85,000 turnover threshold) and charge no VAT — so treat 22% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a central air conditioning, or should you replace it?
