How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?

Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. On parts, the brand differences that actually show up in Italy are on the control boards. The lowest prices observed at Italian spares retailers belong to Immergas, Biasi and Savio, Unical, Baxi, Vaillant and Bosch (Junkers); Beretta and Riello, which share the same electronics, are the reference line for the table; above the reference sit Ariston, Ferroli, Hermann Saunier Duval, Sime and, highest of all, Chaffoteaux. On air conditioning the only published Italian price that could be verified is the LG board: for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic, still the priciest brands for parts, the figure shown is their band median. Pick a tier for a class-typical estimate, or a specific Italian brand to override it.

Brands by quality tier & parts factor Estimated
BrandParts factorBasis
Basic tier parts ×0.8
Savio×0.8Parts ×0.8 (Same seventeen-board basket as Biasi (median EUR 145.00, raw ratio 145.00/244.00 = 0.59 held at the 0.80 floor). The retailer catalogues Savio and Biasi in one combined 'savio-biasi' parts section, which matches the corporate reality: BSG Caldaie a Gas S.p.A. of Pordenone markets boilers under both the Biasi and Savio names. Biasi and Savio are two brand entries sharing ONE observed basket.)
Unical×0.8Parts ×0.8 (published rates from 2 local repair companies)
Fondital×0.8Parts ×0.8 (tier median (Italian value gas-boiler band): no separately published Italian board pricing exists for this brand - the retailer's Fondital/Nova Florida board category carries no priced listings - so the factor is set to the median of the value band actually observed in this file (Immergas 0.80, Biasi/Savio 0.80, Unical 0.80) rather than invented. Fondital's published Italian boiler catalogue has no oil line, so this entry does not carry 'oil-furnace'.)
Italtherm×0.8Parts ×0.8 (tier median (Italian value gas-boiler band): no independently published Italian parts price was found for this brand, so the factor is set to the observed value-band median (0.80) rather than invented. Italtherm is a small Piacenza wall-boiler maker with no separate spares listing on the retailers used in this file.)
Hisense×0.8Parts ×0.8 (tier median (Italian value split-AC band): no stable published Italian board price for Hisense. The value band cannot sit below the single observed Italian AC datapoint's held value (LG indoor board, raw 0.76, held at the 0.80 floor), so this entry is set at 0.80. Not a computed ratio.)

Samsung×0.8Parts ×0.8 (tier median (Italian mainstream split-AC band): no stable published Italian board price for Samsung. The only observed Italian mainstream AC datapoint is the LG indoor board (EUR 185.00, raw ratio 0.76), which is itself held at the 0.80 contract floor, so the band value is 0.80. Not a computed ratio for this brand.)
LG×0.8Parts ×0.8 (published rates from 1 local repair company)
Olimpia Splendid×0.8Parts ×0.8 (tier median (Italian mainstream split-AC band): no Italian retailer used in this file publishes an Olimpia Splendid board price, so no ratio can be computed and the factor is set to the observed mainstream split-AC band value rather than invented. That band value is 0.80, carried by the single observed Italian AC datapoint (LG indoor board, raw ratio 0.76, held at the 0.80 contract floor). Olimpia Splendid is the best-known Italian air-conditioning nameplate, distinctive for the Unico monoblock (no outdoor unit) range and portables.)
Premium tier parts ×1.15
Vaillant×0.8Parts ×0.8 (published rates from 1 local repair company)
Viessmann×0.9Parts ×0.9 (tier median (median of the twelve observed Italian boiler baskets in this file): Viessmann parts in Italy move almost entirely through the manufacturer's own Vitoservice network and no Italian online spares retailer used here publishes a Viessmann board price, so no ratio can be computed. The factor is set to the median of the twelve observed Italian boiler-brand factors (0.80, 0.80, 0.80, 0.80, 0.80, 0.80, 1.00, 1.05, 1.10, 1.10, 1.20, 1.30 -> 0.90) rather than invented, and rather than borrowed from a sibling market file. Note the premium tier itself carries no upward pull in the Italian data: the only observed premium boiler brand, Vaillant, computes to 0.78.)
Daikin×1.2Parts ×1.2 (tier median (premium split-AC / heat-pump band): no Italian retailer publishes a stable priced Daikin board listing. The only observed Italian AC-board prices in this file are LG's (EUR 185.00 indoor board = ratio 0.76, EUR 391.00 outdoor inverter board = ratio 1.60), so the premium AC band is set at 1.20 - close to the midpoint of those two observations (1.18) and clear of the 1.60 ceiling that the outdoor board sits exactly on - rather than passing the outdoor-board ratio through.)
Mitsubishi Electric×1.2Parts ×1.2 (tier median (premium split-AC / heat-pump band): same band and same reasoning as Daikin - no stable published Italian board price for this brand, factor set at the band value 1.20 rather than invented.)
Panasonic×1.15Parts ×1.15 (tier median (premium split-AC / heat-pump band, lower half): no stable published Italian board price; set at 1.15, one step below the Daikin/Mitsubishi Electric band value, reflecting Panasonic's broader independent Italian spares availability. Not a computed ratio.)

How much is a service-call fee for oil furnace repair?

Most Italian companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of €35–€80, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Standard VAT (IVA) of 22% applies to standalone heating and air-conditioning repair services in Italy (DPR 633/1972); a reduced 10% rate can apply when the job counts as ordinary or extraordinary maintenance of a residential property (Law 488/1999 art. 7). Watch the 'beni significativi' cap: the decree of 29 December 1999 lists boilers and air-conditioning equipment by name, so when the boiler or the air conditioner is worth more than half the agreed price, the 10% rate only covers the difference between the total job value and the value of that item. Many small sole-trader firms also use the flat-rate scheme (regime forfettario, €85,000 turnover threshold) and charge no VAT — so treat 22% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.

Is it worth repairing a oil furnace, or should you replace it?

A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a oil furnace — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.

Prices are region-level estimates based on regional wage data (JobPricing Geography Index 2023), not fake city precision. Shopping in the U.S.? See the U.S. version (USD). In Canada?
