How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. The mainstream baseline is Mitsubishi Electric: the air-to-air heat pump is the most common piece of mechanical heating equipment in a Norwegian home, and this is the brand Norwegian parts dealers stock most deeply. Toshiba, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Samsung, Hitachi and LG sit in the same parts-price class, while Daikin and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries sit higher. On the water-borne side — air-to-water and ground-source (bergvarme) — NIBE, CTC, Thermia, Bosch and IVT are the recurring names, with correspondingly higher parts prices; Flexit and Systemair (Villavent) supply balanced ventilation with Nilan above them, and Høiax covers hot-water cylinders. The factors below are parts prices relative to the mainstream baseline — not a quality or reliability ranking. Pick a tier for a class-typical estimate, or a specific Norwegian brand to override it.
| Brand | Parts factor | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Basic tier parts ×0.85 | ||
| Electrolux | ×0.85 | Parts ×0.85 (tier median (mainstream/value air-to-air band): reservedel.no carries Electrolux heat-pump parts but publishes no board price for the brand, so the factor is set at the observed air-to-air band midpoint (0.85) rather than invented.) |
| Nobø | ×0.85 | Parts ×0.85 (tier median (value electric-heating controls band): no consolidated Norwegian parts price listing is published for this brand. The entry is confined to 'thermostat-controls' because Nobo's room thermostats, receivers and the Nobo Energy Control system are the parts of its range that map to this taxonomy - its panel heaters have no corresponding type.) |
| Adax | ×0.85 | Parts ×0.85 (tier median (value electric-heating controls band): no consolidated Norwegian parts price listing is published. Confined to 'thermostat-controls' - Adax's electronic and wifi thermostats are the part of its range that maps to this taxonomy.) |
| Mill | ×0.85 | Parts ×0.85 (tier median (value electric-heating controls band): no consolidated Norwegian parts price listing is published. Confined to 'thermostat-controls' - Mill's wifi thermostats and smart heating controls are the part of its range that maps to this taxonomy.) |
| Mid-range tier parts ×0.925 | ||
| Mitsubishi Electric | ×1 | Baseline — no parts adjustment |
| Toshiba | ×0.95 | Parts ×0.95 (Like-for-like, class-matched, single pair at JS Energi: Toshiba PCB for RAS-25J2AVSG-NO kr 7 456 against the Mitsubishi Electric board for MUZ-FH25VEHZ E1 kr 7 851 = ratio 0.9497, set to 0.95. Both are outdoor boards for a domestic ~2.5 kW split, so the comparison stays inside a single board class, as this guide requires. It rests on that one pair, and that is stated plainly. An alternative 0.90 factor - the midpoint of this 0.95 and a whole-catalogue reading of 0.80 built on a Mitsubishi Electric board median of kr 8 517 - is not used, because no Norwegian price set observed for this guide produces that median. The Mitsubishi Electric boards actually observed at JS Energi are kr 3 512, 3 907, 7 851 and 10 105 -> median kr 5 879; the Toshiba boards there are kr 4 003, 5 498, 6 851, 7 456 and 16 224 -> median kr 6 851, so a same-retailer whole-catalogue ratio would be 1.17, not 0.80. That 1.17 is not used either: the two baskets are not class-comparable (the Toshiba list is dominated by light-commercial boards such as the RAV-RM401MUT-E and a kr 16 224 item), which is exactly the mixed-basket artefact this guide rejects for Panasonic.) |

| Systemair (Villavent) | ×1.2 | Parts ×1.2 (tier median (Norwegian balanced-ventilation band): no Norwegian price for a Systemair/Villavent control board is published, so the factor is placed one step below the only observed ventilation-class brand (Flexit, capped at 1.40) rather than invented. The Villavent nameplate is carried in the label because it is the name a large share of Norwegian households still use for their unit.) |
| LG | ×0.85 | Parts ×0.85 (tier median (mainstream air-to-air band): no Norwegian LG board price is published, so the factor is set at the midpoint of the observed mainstream air-to-air band (Panasonic 0.80, Samsung 0.80, Fujitsu 0.90, Toshiba 0.90) rather than invented.) |
| Høiax | ×1 | Baseline — no parts adjustment |

| Nilan | ×1.3 | Parts ×1.3 (tier median (premium balanced-ventilation / exhaust-air heat-pump band): no Norwegian parts price is published for this brand, so the factor is set inside the observed ventilation band (Flexit capped at 1.40, Systemair 1.20) rather than invented.) |
| Nibe | ×1.3 | Parts ×1.3 (tier median (Nordic air-to-water / ground-source heat-pump band): Nibe parts move through the brand's own Norwegian dealer network and no open price listing is published, so the factor is placed just below IVT - the only brand in that class with observed Norwegian prices (raw 1.62, set to 1.50) - rather than invented.) |
| CTC | ×1.25 | Parts ×1.25 (tier median (Nordic air-to-water / ground-source and electric-boiler band): no open Norwegian parts price is published, so the factor is set inside the band anchored by IVT (1.50) and Nibe (1.30) rather than invented.) |
| Thermia | ×1.25 | Parts ×1.25 (published rates from 1 local repair company) |
| Bosch | ×1.2 | Parts ×1.2 (tier median (Bosch-group heat-pump band): no Bosch-branded Norwegian board price is published. The only Bosch-group parts observed in Norway are IVT's (indoor board kr 5 060, raw 1.62, set to 1.50); Bosch is placed a step below at 1.20 because its Norwegian range also spans the cheaper air-to-air segment. Not a computed ratio.) |

Heat Pump defrost control board replacement: what usually causes it? Estimated

Fault-finding on the defrost control with a check of the sensors
Pro recommendedkr 990–kr 3 300
On Norwegian domestic heat pumps the defrost cycle is controlled by the main board in the outdoor unit together with a frost sensor and an outdoor temperature sensor. Very often it is the sensor and not the board that is faulty, and a sensor costs little: Norwegian parts dealers price heat-pump temperature sensors from NOK 486 and thermistor sets from NOK 498. Fault-finding on its own runs NOK 990–1,500. The spread is driven by how many sensors and signal paths have to be measured before the fault is isolated. This entry applies both to air-to-air split systems and to the outdoor unit of air-to-water systems. The job is not DIY: the board and the sensors sit in the fixed electrical installation, which is reserved for a business registered in the Register of Electrical Enterprises, and if the circuit has to be opened, an F-gas certificate is required.

Replacing the outdoor-unit control board that runs the defrost cycle
Pro recommendedkr 4 000–kr 20 000
If the board itself is dead, the bill is dominated by the part. Norwegian parts dealers price control boards from NOK 2,380 for simpler Mitsubishi models, a Daikin main board at NOK 6,995, a Mitsubishi inverter board at NOK 9,992 and a Fujitsu outdoor-unit control board as high as NOK 16,588 — that is what makes the range so wide. The working time, by contrast, is short: one and a half to three hours. The trade describes circuit boards as expensive and model-dependent and recommends replacing the whole pump when the system is old or the parts are discontinued; a new air-to-air pump fully installed runs NOK 15,000–40,000, so a board at fifteen thousand is rarely worth it. This entry applies both to split systems and to air-to-water outdoor units. Fixed electrical work is reserved for a registered electrical business.

How much is a service-call fee for heat pump repair?
Most Norwegian companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of kr 900–kr 2 500, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. VAT (MVA, 25%) may or may not be included: Norway has no reduced VAT rate for repairs, but small firms and sole traders with under NOK 50,000 in annual turnover are not VAT-registered and add no VAT — so treat 25% as a ceiling, not a guaranteed add-on.
Is it worth repairing a heat pump, or should you replace it?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new unit — or the appliance is past ~8 years for a heat pump — replacement is often the better value. The calculator's localized totals give you the number to weigh against a new-unit quote.
Prices are county (fylke)-level estimates based on regional wage data (SSB lønnsstatistikk 2024), not fake city precision. Shopping in the U.S.? See the U.S. version (USD). In Canada?
