How do brand and quality tier change the repair cost?
Brand and tier adjust the parts portion only — never labour. Most of Brazil's installed base is ductless split air conditioning, and that is where the parts bill is decided — mainly on control boards, capacitors and inverter compressors. The mainstream core is Consul, Electrolux, Springer Midea, Midea, Elgin, Komeco, Gree, LG, Carrier and York; Philco, TCL and Agratto make up the value end; Samsung, Fujitsu, Daikin, Hitachi and Trane sit at the premium end. Parts prices do not always follow the price of the unit: high-volume lines tend to have cheaper, faster-moving spares, while brands with imported or exclusive parts cost more. On the central-heating side — boilers, warm-air furnaces and heat pumps — the installed base is small and concentrated in the South and in commercial buildings, so parts are usually imported and slower to source. Before buying a motor, you change the capacitor: at Brazilian retail the 2.5uF part costs R$ 15.00, and a motor that only hums and will not turn is often simply not starting. A cost guide publishes a capacitor at R$ 150 to R$ 300 with the labour already inside, and in Curitiba a capacitor swap appears at R$ 200 to R$ 350. The gain is obvious: you spend a tenth of the price of the big part to find out whether the motor really is burned out. The test is done with the panel open and live, so by an authorised technician, never by the occupant.

How much is a service-call fee for central air conditioning repair?
Most Brazilian companies charge a call-out / diagnostic fee of R$80–R$250, often credited toward the repair if you go ahead. It is separate from the repair totals above. Brazil has no single national VAT on HVAC labour: the service is taxed by the municipal ISS at a rate each city sets between 2% and 5% (Lei Complementar nº 116/2003), while parts and refrigerant are taxed separately by state ICMS. In practice a Brazilian HVAC quote arrives as one all-in figure with those taxes already inside it and no line-item breakdown; many sole traders and small registered businesses (MEI) never itemize them at all. Treat any percentage as a ceiling, never a guaranteed add-on to the figures above.
Is it worth repairing a central air conditioning, or should you replace it?
