HVAC Warranty Costs (New Zealand, 2026)
In New Zealand the residential norm is a single-tier manufacturer warranty that covers BOTH parts and labour — most commonly 5 years, running from the date of purchase and usually with no registration step needed to obtain it (Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric via Black Diamond Technologies, LG, Samsung and Haier all publish this shape). There is no US-style register-within-60-days-to-double-your-coverage pattern here. On top of any manufacturer warranty sits the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, which requires goods to be of acceptable quality and to last a reasonable time and which a business cannot contract out of or limit to the terms of a warranty — so a heat pump that fails soon after a 5-year term expires is not automatically the owner's problem. Watch two things: a long headline number is usually a compressor-only, parts-only figure (the technician's labour and the refrigerant stay the owner's to pay), and corrosion in coastal or geothermal air, poor installation, parallel-imported units and travel or access to hard-to-reach sites are common exclusions. A separate paid 'home warranty' service contract of the US kind is not a standard New Zealand product; what is sold here are per-product extended warranties, which Consumer NZ notes largely duplicate rights the buyer already has. Below: each brand's own terms with its own source, and what actually voids coverage. Informational only — no rankings, no recommendations. Reviewed July 2026.
Manufacturer warranty terms, by brand Estimated
Standard = the base defect warranty; component = any longer coverage on specific parts. Each row cites that brand's own official warranty documentation (retrieved 2026-07-19). Terms vary by model and change over time — confirm on the manufacturer's current warranty document.
| Brand | Standard warranty | Extended component coverage | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Electric | 5 years parts and labour on M, S and P Series split systems, on MXZ and PUMY multi-split systems (including indoor units), and on Lossnay / energy recovery ventilation (VL and LGH Series). The warranty is issued by Black Diamond Technologies Limited (BDT), the New Zealand distributor, runs from the date the equipment is purchased, and applies to the original purchaser; defects are repaired or replaced at BDT's discretion 'without cost to the owner for parts or direct repair labour', by a BDT-authorised repair company during normal business hours. No registration is required for cover to exist (BDT invites registration at bdt.co.nz/warranty), and parts replaced under warranty are covered for the remainder of the original period or 12 months from completion of the repair, whichever is greater. | Shorter terms on ancillaries: air curtains 1 year parts and labour, ventilation fans 1 year, BDT-supplied controllers, accessories, peripherals and ducted kits 1 year, Jet Towels 3 years; a BlueDiamond condensate pump gets 5 years if installed with a new Mitsubishi Electric heat pump but only 3 years if retrofitted. Notable New Zealand exclusions: any product imported by anyone other than BDT (parallel/grey imports) is not covered at all; pipework (refrigerant or condensate), electrical cabling, control wiring, drainage and ducting are the installer's responsibility and are outside the manufacturer warranty; corrosion failures in coastal, geothermal, industrial or chemically contaminated environments are not treated as manufacturing defects unless BDT itself applied its approved Nyalic corrosion protection; travel is capped at a 100 km round trip; and access costs (crane, elevated work platform, hiab) for units in restricted or unsafe positions are excluded. The owner is responsible for regular filter cleaning and keeping the condensate drain clear. | Mitsubishi Electric New Zealand / Black Diamond Technologies Ltd |
| Daikin | 5 years parts and labour. Daikin's NZ page states the 'Daikin 5-Year Parts and Labour warranty applies to all Daikin split, multi-split and ducted air conditioners professionally installed in domestic premises in New Zealand'. The warranty card adds that equipment is warranted by Daikin Air Conditioning New Zealand Limited against defects in design, materials and workmanship 'for a period of 5 years from the date the equipment is purchased by the original owner', repaired or replaced at Daikin New Zealand's discretion 'without cost to the owner for parts or direct repair labour' during normal business hours by Daikin New Zealand or an authorised repair agent. There is no registration gate — but both the completed warranty card and the purchase docket must be presented to obtain a warranty repair. | Parts or equipment replaced under the warranty are covered for the remainder of the original period or 12 months from completion of the repair, whichever is greater. Excluded: damage from incorrect or poor installation; faulty external wiring, incorrect supply, voltage fluctuation or over-voltage transients; non-Daikin accessories or components; storm, fire, flood, vandalism, misuse, negligence, earthquake or vermin; deterioration of external surfaces or refrigeration coils from normal weathering or corrosive atmospheric conditions; additional labour to gain safe service access to units in restricted or high positions; freight and travel for repairs outside the area normally serviced; equipment re-installed at a different location or fitted to a caravan or boat; and consumables such as batteries and filters. The card states plainly that 'THE RIGHTS GIVEN BY THE DAIKIN NEW ZEALAND 5 YEAR WARRANTY ARE IN ADDITION TO THE OWNER'S STATUTORY RIGHTS' under the Fair Trading Act 1986 and Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. | Daikin New Zealand |
| Toshiba | Toshiba heat pumps and air conditioners are distributed in New Zealand by AHI Carrier New Zealand, whose warranty terms — headed 'Effective for Products Supplied from 1 June 2025' — set the period by PRODUCT TYPE rather than as a single blanket figure. Toshiba air conditioning systems (hi-wall splits, ducted systems, floor consoles and multi-split systems) installed at residential premises in New Zealand carry a 10-year residential warranty: Years 1–5 cover 'all parts and AHI Carrier NZ-approved labour costs', and Years 6–10 are 'parts only (labour not included)'. Toshiba Estia hot-water heat pumps do NOT get the 10-year term — they sit in a separate 5-year residential category covering all parts and AHI Carrier NZ-approved labour for 5 years from the date of original installation. Toshiba light-commercial air conditioning is its own 5-year (all parts and approved labour) tier. | The warranty applies only to the original installation location and original purchaser and is non-transferable; it requires installation by a qualified technician to AHI Carrier NZ's guidelines, and proof of purchase and installation details must be provided to claim (AHI Carrier NZ reserves the right to inspect and assess eligibility). Repairs are at AHI Carrier NZ's sole discretion, and parts replaced under warranty are covered for the remainder of the original period or 12 months, whichever is greater. Exclusions mirror the NZ pattern: incorrect or poor installation; external electrical faults (faulty wiring, incorrect supply, voltage fluctuation, over-voltage transients); accessories or components not supplied by AHI Carrier NZ; storm, fire, flood, earthquake, vandalism, negligence or vermin; deterioration of external surfaces or refrigeration coils from normal weathering or corrosive atmospheric conditions; extra labour or access costs for units in restricted or unsafe (e.g. high) positions; and freight or travel outside the area normally serviced. Filter cleaning, keeping the outdoor unit clear, keeping the condensate drain clean and applying additional corrosion protection in corrosive (industrial, sulphur-zone, sea-air) environments are the owner's responsibility. IMPORTANT for older installs: Toshiba and Carrier products supplied BEFORE 1 June 2025 stay on the original terms in force at the time of purchase — historically a blanket 10-year term (first 5 years parts and labour, years 6 to 10 parts only) that required a completed 10-year registration form with commissioning, model and serial details; the current terms above replaced that structure for products supplied from 1 June 2025. | AHI Carrier New Zealand |
| HRV | 5 years (stated as 60 months) from the installation date on HRV ventilation systems and on the Lossnay ventilation systems HRV sells, against manufacturing defects, with HRV repairing or replacing at its discretion and covering reasonable onsite labour charges as well as parts. | Conditional on filter maintenance: filter changes are required every two years (more often in dusty, pollen-heavy or smoky environments), must be done by HRV-authorised personnel using genuine HRV filters, and are at the owner's expense. If the recommended filter maintenance has not been done in the 24 months before a fault occurs, the warranty does not apply. Cover is also lost if the system is repaired by an unauthorised technician or non-genuine parts are fitted, and does not extend to damage from vermin, power surges, fire or flood. The warranty transfers to a new owner with proof of the original purchase; relocating the system requires HRV-approved reinstallation at the owner's cost. | HRV New Zealand |
| SmartVent | 5 years from the installation date on SmartVent air ventilation systems, against defects in materials and workmanship. Evolve tablets carry 1 year. Filter replacement is not covered. | Conditions: proof of purchase (bill of sale, invoice or receipt) plus a completed and returned warranty card; the system must be operated per the manufacturer's instructions and its air filters changed when due; only genuine SmartVent parts may be used, and fitting non-genuine components voids the entire warranty. Critically for a homeowner tracing a fault, the installation work itself is warranted by the certified installer, not by SmartVent — a manufacturer warranty claim and an installation-workmanship claim go to different parties. Where another manufacturer's equipment is supplied, that manufacturer's own warranty applies. The policy carries the standard statutory-rights statement: goods 'come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Consumer Law', with entitlement to a replacement or refund for a major failure. | SmartVent New Zealand |
| Samsung | 5 years (stated as 60 months) on residential air conditioning. | A 10-year inverter compressor warranty applies, valid for wall-mounted / wall-hung single split types only. Samsung NZ states this compressor cover is parts only: 'All labour and other costs are excluded.' As with LG, the long compressor headline number is not a long full-system number. | Samsung New Zealand |
| LG | 5 years parts and labour on split systems — high wall, cassette, ducted and Multi F & FDX. Window and portable units get 2 years parts and labour, and Multi V VRF systems 2 years parts and labour. | High wall split systems carry an additional 5 years of limited warranty on the compressor on top of the 5-year system warranty. LG NZ states that this compressor extension 'is for parts cover only and does not include cost of labour, refrigerant or other consumables' — so on a year 6-10 compressor failure the homeowner still pays the technician's time and the refrigerant. | LG New Zealand |
| Rinnai | Rinnai New Zealand states that it offers 'comprehensive warranty plans covering parts and labour', but publishes the term length per individual product through an interactive warranty lookup rather than on a fetchable page, so no year figure is asserted here for any Rinnai product category. | One published condition is unambiguous and matters to a homeowner reading a repair quote: 'Servicing is not part of the warranty and is not covered' — a routine service or maintenance visit on an in-warranty Rinnai appliance is a paid call, not a warranty call. | Rinnai New Zealand |
| Rheem | Rheem New Zealand publishes a domestic warranty table that runs long on the tank or cylinder but short on labour, and the split is the point. Mains-pressure vitreous-enamel (MPVE) electric cylinders carry 10 years on the cylinder, 5 years on a replacement cylinder and 1 year parts and labour; the Optima mains-pressure VE cylinder (models made after 1 June 2018) runs 12 years cylinder, 5 years replacement and 3 years labour; mains-pressure stainless-steel (MPSS) is 10 years cylinder, 3 years replacement, 1 year parts and labour. Gas continuous-flow is 3 years parts and labour with 10 years on the heat exchanger; Stellar outdoor gas storage is 10 years cylinder, 3 years replacement, 1 year parts and labour. | Heat-pump water heaters carry a shorter cylinder term than the electric cylinders: the Ambiheat heat pump is 7 years cylinder, 3 years replacement and 1 year labour, and the AmbiPower MDc-180 and 280e are 7 years cylinder, 3 years replacement, 1 year parts and labour. Solar (Premier Loline) is 5 years cylinder, 3 years replacement, 1 year labour, with the heat exchanger warranted 5 years. Read the way a homeowner should: a '10-year' or '12-year' Rheem headline is a tank or cylinder figure — the labour to fit a warranty replacement is covered for only 1 to 3 years — so a cylinder that leaks in year eight is a covered tank but a paid installation. | Rheem New Zealand |
| Weiss | Weiss New Zealand states that the warranty term 'varies from product to product but is stated in the product data sheets on our website'; its flagship home-ventilation systems, the Suprema Vent and Suprema Vent Ultima, each carry a 5-year warranty. | The warranty covers 'faults arising from defective materials or components, faulty workmanship or assembly', and comprises a 12-month warranty on lamps and electronics with the remainder of the term on all other parts; labour is not expressly covered and Weiss repairs or replaces at its own discretion. It is void where the installation does not comply with Weiss's instructions or with the relevant electrical and building codes (a Certificate of Compliance is required to claim on a hardwired installation), and it excludes wear and tear, misuse, accidents, neglect and insufficient maintenance. For commercial or industrial use the term is cut to 120 days (3 months). | Weiss New Zealand |
| Sayr | Sayr New Zealand offers a 6-year guarantee on all parts and workmanship for its positive-pressure home-ventilation system: 'SAYR is so confident with the product, we offer a 6 year guarantee on all parts and workmanship.' | This is a materials-and-workmanship guarantee against manufacturing defects. Sayr publishes no separate per-clause warranty document, so beyond the 6-year parts-and-workmanship figure only the general NZ-ventilation position is noted here: routine filter replacement and servicing are the owner's ongoing cost, not a warranty call. No further Sayr-specific exclusions are asserted, because none is published. | Sayr New Zealand |
| Haier | 5-year manufacturer's warranty on air conditioning products with less than 25 kW system cooling capacity — i.e. the whole residential range. Products of 25 kW or more get 2 years, and chiller products 1 year. | Haier air conditioners are excluded from Haier NZ's standard 2-year domestic appliance warranty and run on these separate air-conditioning terms. The New Zealand importer/warrantor is Fisher & Paykel Appliances Ltd. A maintenance check or service visit requested by the owner 'is not covered by your manufacturer's warranty and a charge will apply' — routine servicing is never a warranty call. Note that the downloadable Haier air-conditioner warranty booklet is a shared trans-Tasman document whose statutory-rights clauses are written to the Australian Consumer Law; for a New Zealand buyer the governing statute is the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, not the ACL. | Haier New Zealand |
What a home warranty costs Estimated
A home warranty is an optional annual service contract sold by third-party companies (separate from the manufacturer warranty). Generic industry ranges — not tied to, and not an endorsement of, any provider:
- Annual premium: — for typical plans that include HVAC coverage; higher-coverage comprehensive plans run —.
- Service (call-out) fee: — per visit, paid on top of the premium each time a technician comes out.

What can void a warranty
General consumer-protection facts, not legal advice:
- In New Zealand the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 sits on top of, and outlasts, any manufacturer warranty. Goods must be of acceptable quality — they must do what they are made to do, be safe, be free of defects and 'last a reasonable time' — and a business 'cannot limit their obligations to the terms of a store or manufacturer's warranty'. A business that tries to contract out of the CGA commits an offence under the Fair Trading Act. Daikin New Zealand's own warranty card says the same thing from the manufacturer's side: the rights it gives 'are in addition to the owner's statutory rights'. Practically, a heat pump that fails at year six is not automatically the homeowner's problem just because a 5-year warranty has run out — what counts is what a reasonable buyer would expect that product, at that price, to last. — Consumer Protection
- The New Zealand norm for a residential heat pump is 5 years covering BOTH parts and labour, running from the date of purchase, with no registration step needed to get it: Daikin (5-year parts and labour on split, multi-split and ducted), Mitsubishi Electric via Black Diamond Technologies (5 years parts and labour on M/S/P Series and MXZ/PUMY), LG (5 years parts and labour on high wall, cassette, ducted and Multi F & FDX splits), Samsung (60 months) and Haier (5 years under 25 kW) all publish that shape. The one sourced exception on length is AHI Carrier New Zealand, the NZ distributor of Toshiba (and Carrier): under its terms effective for products supplied from 1 June 2025, Toshiba hi-wall, ducted, floor-console and multi-split systems carry a 10-year residential warranty — but only Years 1 to 5 include labour and Years 6 to 10 are parts-only — while Toshiba Estia hot-water heat pumps sit in a separate 5-year parts-and-labour category; the current terms require proof of purchase and installation details to claim, not the up-front registration form the pre-June-2025 terms once demanded. — Daikin New Zealand
- A long headline number on a New Zealand heat pump is usually a compressor-only, parts-only number — the technician's time is still the homeowner's to pay. LG NZ's extra 5 years on the compressor of high wall splits 'is for parts cover only and does not include cost of labour, refrigerant or other consumables'. Samsung NZ's 10-year inverter compressor warranty applies only to wall-mounted / wall-hung single split types and states that 'all labour and other costs are excluded'. AHI Carrier's Years 6 to 10 on its 10-year residential air-conditioning warranty are likewise 'parts only (labour not included)'. So a year-8 compressor claim on any of these still produces a labour and refrigerant invoice. — LG New Zealand
- Corrosion is the New Zealand warranty exclusion that catches homeowners out. Black Diamond Technologies (Mitsubishi Electric NZ) states that equipment installed in corrosive or potentially corrosive environments — 'coastal, geothermal, industrial or chemically contaminated' — must be assessed and given corrosion protection appropriate to the site before installation, and that corrosion failure is not a manufacturing defect where that protection was not correctly specified, applied or maintained; cover is only accepted where BDT itself applied its approved Nyalic protection, not where a third party applied a coating. Daikin NZ and AHI Carrier NZ both exclude deterioration of external surfaces or refrigeration coils caused by normal weathering or corrosive atmospheric conditions. In a country where a large share of housing sits within a few kilometres of the sea, and Rotorua-area homes sit in geothermal air, a corroded outdoor coil is frequently an out-of-warranty repair. — Mitsubishi Electric NZ / Black Diamond Technologies
- The manufacturer warranty covers the box, not the installation. Daikin NZ and AHI Carrier NZ both exclude 'damage or problems resulting from incorrect or poor installation'. Black Diamond Technologies goes further and lists what is outside Mitsubishi Electric cover entirely: refrigerant and condensate pipework, electrical cabling and control wiring, drainage, ducting, and non-Mitsubishi external control devices — 'responsibility for the performance, specification, and installation of these components rests solely with the installer'. SmartVent states the same division for ventilation: the installation work is warranted by the certified installer, not by SmartVent. So a leaking flare, a blocked condensate drain or an undersized system is an installer matter, and a homeowner chasing the manufacturer for it will be redirected. — Mitsubishi Electric NZ / Black Diamond Technologies
- Routine servicing is never a warranty call in New Zealand, and on ventilation systems skipping it can end the warranty. Rinnai NZ states flatly that 'servicing is not part of the warranty and is not covered'. Haier's NZ warranty booklet says a requested maintenance check or service 'is not covered by your manufacturer's warranty and a charge will apply'. HRV requires filter changes at least every two years, by HRV-authorised personnel using genuine filters at the owner's cost, and the warranty does not apply if that maintenance was not done in the 24 months before a fault; SmartVent requires filters to be changed when due and voids the entire warranty if non-genuine parts are fitted. Mitsubishi Electric NZ places regular filter cleaning and keeping the condensate drain clear on the owner as an express warranty responsibility. — Rinnai New Zealand
- Parallel-imported equipment can arrive with no New Zealand warranty at all. Black Diamond Technologies states that 'any product imported by an individual or distributor other than Black Diamond Technologies Limited is not covered under this warranty' — so a Mitsubishi Electric unit bought from an offshore or unofficial channel has no NZ manufacturer cover, whatever the brand's warranty says in its home market. The Consumer Guarantees Act still applies against the New Zealand supplier who sold the goods, but there is no NZ manufacturer warranty behind the unit. — Mitsubishi Electric NZ / Black Diamond Technologies
- Warranty repairs are not door-to-door free anywhere in New Zealand. Black Diamond Technologies caps travel at a 100 km round trip and excludes crane, lift platform and hiab costs where access requires them; Daikin NZ excludes freight and travelling cost for repairs performed outside the area normally serviced by Daikin New Zealand or its authorised agent, plus any additional labour to gain acceptable service access to equipment in restricted or unsafe (for example high) locations; AHI Carrier NZ carries the same access exclusion. For a rural or hard-to-access property, an in-warranty repair can still generate a travel or access charge. — Mitsubishi Electric NZ / Black Diamond Technologies
- An extended warranty sold on top of a New Zealand heat pump is regulated, and largely duplicates rights the buyer already has. Consumer NZ notes that with an extended warranty you are probably paying for protection you are already entitled to under consumer laws, because the CGA already requires products to be of acceptable quality and fit for purpose for a reasonable period. The front page of an extended warranty agreement must set out a summary of the buyer's CGA rights and remedies, and the buyer has a cooling-off period of 5 working days to cancel and get a refund, whether the agreement was signed in store or agreed by phone. — Consumer NZ
